What Are the 7 Steps of Skincare?

Creating a proper skincare routine involves choosing the right products for your skin type. Once you determine the needs of your skin, you can then build your daily routine. But in what order do you apply everything?

Putting everything in order allows your skin to get the best benefits from the ingredients in each formulation. Here are the 7 steps of skincare to follow to get the best results.

Step 1: Cleanser

For both morning and evening routines, the first step will always be your cleansing step. While you’ll want to choose a cleanser that meets the needs of your skin, for any skin type, you should avoid a cleanser that leaves skin tight and dry afterward. Don’t forget to use lukewarm water rather than hot water to keep from drying out your skin!

Step 2: Exfoliant

Exfoliants come in the form of a scrub, enzyme or acid. Less is more with this step. Over exfoliation can damage your skins barrier to protect and can do more harm then good. Stick with 2-3 times a week for this step.

Step 3: Toner

Toners help keep the pH of your skin balanced and offer an additional cleanse while delivering more antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients. Avoid any toner that has alcohol in it…this shouldn’t dry out your skin but rather, help it feel hydrated, refreshed, and healthy.

Step 4: Serum

Following your toner, you should use a serum packed with nutrients. The molecules are smaller and more potent, which is why you need to put it close to the skin. Choose one that addresses your skin concerns such as hydration or anti-aging. If you have several skin concerns to address, don't hesitate to find a serum to for each of your needs. When using multiple serums make sure read the instructions on best time of day. If you are layering your serums always layer lightest to heaviest. Gels fist, creams last.

Step 5: Moisturizer

Even oily skin needs moisturizer, so find the right one for your skin type. Ideally, your skin should be slightly damp as you apply this layer.

For daytime, you can apply a moisturizer with SPF for protection. But if you have one you love without it, you can always add sun protection in the final step. For nightly skin routines, choose a moisturizer formulated for night. It will typically deliver more of what your skin needs while you dream away.

Step 6: Eye Cream

Eye cream is especially important in your nighttime routine, though it’s helpful for mornings too. This area of your skin is thinner and more delicate, making it more prone to sagging and lines. You’ll find formulations that can address puffiness, darkness, lines, and volume loss.

Step 7: SUNSCREEN

Finally, if your daytime moisturizer doesn’t have SPF, then apply a good sunscreen. Ideally, something with zinc is best to go on top of moisturizer while blocking the UVA and UVB rays.

When you need to build your skincare routine, look no further than Whole Beauty Skincare. You’ll find all the products you need for all 7 steps!
