What Should Men Do for Skincare?

Posted by Erin VanValkenburg on

A huge shift in perspective has led to men wanting to do more for their skin. Gone are the days where there was a stigma attached to a man caring for his skin. While your skin will have some different needs than the skin of a woman, these tips will help you build a proper routine that lets your skin exude healthy confidence.

Know Your Skin Type

One thing you will have in common with your female counterparts is that you first need to determine your skin type. Is it dry, oily, combination, normal, or sensitive? The products you choose for your skincare regimen need to be designed to meet your skin’s needs.

If your skin is normal, it’s clear and healthy. If it’s dry, it may flake, feel itchy, or have rough patches. Oily skin is greasy and shiny while combination skin has some dry spots and some oily areas. As for sensitive skin, you may feel stinging or burning when you use some products, or notice redness and irritation.

Consider What You Want Out of Your Skin

Once you know your skin type, you’ll want to think of your skin goals. For example, if you have acne, your goal will likely be clear skin. If you’re getting lines and wrinkles, you may want to take measures to reduce the appearance of aging. By focusing on what you want, you’ll get better results.

Know When to Wash

Cleansing is the most important step to start off your morning and nighttime skincare habits. Avoid bar soaps as they have harsh ingredients that dry things out. You’ll also want to keep the water lukewarm rather than hot as this will also deplete skin of its natural moisture. Don’t forget to wash your face after that workout either…sweat can get trapped in your pores along with dirt and other pollutants, leading to breakouts.

Be Careful When You Shave

If you’re more comfortable with a bare face, then be sure you take the steps to protect your skin while shaving. Razor bumps and burns along with ingrown hairs can be uncomfortable, plus they leave your skin looking agitated. Always wet your skin and stumble before you begin shaving. Using shaving cream with added moisturizers can help too. Follow the shave in the direction of hair growth and change your blade often to minimize irritations.

Use Moisturizer

Moisturizer locks water into your skin to keep it healthy, youthful, and bright. It works best when you apply it while your skin is still damp.

Add Sunscreen During Daylight Hours

If you want your skin to look its best as you age, prevent sun damage by applying SPF. Lines, wrinkles, and age spots are all brought on by the damaging UV rays of the sun. It’s best to go with something that has an SPF of 30 or higher. One of the most alarming things is that sun can damage your skin even on cloudy or cold days, even when you are not actively out in the sun. Don’t skip this crucial skincare step!
